Scientists have tested the whole 5-second rule theory...and apparently it rings true. So, as long as you pick the food up within 5 seconds, you're pretty safe (won't die a horrible bacteria death).

However, when testers contaminated the floor with ecoli, the food was contaminated before the 5 seconds were up.

The moral of this story is?...I'm not really sure. It's pretty stupid and pointless.
